Moorhead became the site for a new normal school in Northwestern Minnesota after State Senator Solomon Comstock introduced a bill to the Minnesota State Legislature in 1885. Minnesota State University-Moorhead reports that it is nationally accredited. Accreditation is by an agency recognized by the US DeptMSUM offers more than 135 majors and 19 areas of pre-professional studies with 32 academic departments in its four Colleges: Arts & Humanities, Business & Industry, Education and Human Services, and Social & Natural Sciences. Graduate degree programs are offered in 15 academic areas
